The 5 Wildest Night Races in NASCAR History

2026-01-15

Night racing at Bristol, Daytona, and Richmond has produced some of the most intense moments in NASCAR history. The lights change everything. Tempers run hotter, the racing gets closer, and the drama turns up to eleven.

1. 2002 Bristol Night Race

Jeff Gordon and Rusty Wallace went at it lap after lap. Gordon spun Wallace on the last lap and took the win. Bristol erupted. The crowd threw beer cans on the track. It was chaos.

2. 2001 Pepsi 400 at Daytona

The first race back at Daytona after Dale Earnhardt died in the 500 five months earlier. Dale Jr. won. The entire garage came to pit road to celebrate. Nobody who watched it will forget.

3. 2009 Bristol Night Race

Kyle Busch and Dale Jr. made contact with 5 laps to go. Busch wrecked. The crowd roared. Bristol lived up to its reputation as the toughest short track on the schedule.

4. 2014 Daytona July Race

A massive wreck on the last lap collected half the field. Austin Dillon went airborne into the catch fence. Cars were scattered across the tri-oval. Somehow, nobody was seriously hurt.

5. 2020 Bristol All-Star Race

First Cup race on Bristol dirt since 1970. Under the lights, on dirt, with a $1 million prize. Chase Elliott won. The track was slick, the racing was sideways, and the whole thing felt like a fever dream.

Squares Make Night Races Better

Every one of these races had moments where the lead changed in the final laps. With a squares pool running, those moments hit harder. Set one up for the next night race and find out.
